Ellie, Gulliver and Echo, 6-month-old chihuahua puppies all born without front legs were fitted for custom-designed wheeled carts built by Eddie’s Wheels, a custom manufacturer of wheeled carts for pets. They were fitted with the custom wheels on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA), an organization that adopts, protects and provides medical attention to thousands of animals in the United States.

According to international reports, the three chihuahuas were left homeless when their owner passed away earlier this year. They were surrendered to MSPCA until they have all been adopted individually.

“The MSPCA is proud to have found loving homes that can accommodate the special needs of these resilient and spirited puppies,” said Mike Keiley, director of the Noble Family Animal Care & Adoption Center at the MSPCA at Nevins Farm as quoted from MSPCA’s website.

The wheel carts were precisely measured for each puppy and the fitting of the custom-designed wheels was said to be the reunion of the three dogs sincethey were adopted separately.

Meanwhile, a YouTube video of Ellie, Gulliver and Echo posted on the MSPCA’s website prompted adoption inquiries as far away as Singapore which is no longer possible since they were already adopted.

Here is a YouTube video of Ellie, Gulliver and Echo courtesy of Edswheel during the inaugural run for all three puppies using their custom-designed wheels.

JFK Turtles: Flights Delayed At JFK Airport Due To Turtles On The Runway

Flight delays at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK Airport) on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 were being blamed on turtles on the runway, several news sites reported on that day.

According to reports, the Port Authority (PA) said that about 150 diamond back terrapins were on the Runway 4L at around 9:30am EDT. The runway was shut down to move the turtles to safer ground, Federal Aviation Administration said.
One of the affected airlines is the Jetblue Airways, which reported the incident on Twitter saying: “JFK is experiencing delays as the airport clears turtles off the runway.” On another tweet, it said, “Running over turtles is not healthy for them nor is it good for our tires.”
Reports said that the incident is actually an annual event at the airport. The turtles were said to be at the middle of their spawning season on which they crawl out of the Jamaica Bay onto the runway looking for higher ground to lay their eggs.
“The sandy spot on the other side of Runway 4L is ideal for egg laying. It is a naturally provided turtle maternity ward. When your airport is virtually surrounded by water, your neighbors sometimes come in the hard shell variety,” PA spokesman John Kelly was quoted as saying.

Leatherback Turtles Journey Across South Atlantic Tracked By Scientists

The Leatherback turtles in the eastern Pacific Ocean was said to be declining over the past three decades. The decline is more than 90 percent because of the unsustainable harvesting of turtle eggs and by accidental catching in nets and traps that are meant for other marine species.

According to international news sites, scientists conducted a study for five years to track the destinations of the Leatherback turtles. Scientist at the University of Exeter attached a satellite tracking devices onto the turtles and mapped their vast migration pattern.

Researchers said that the findings are important to protect the turtles from threats such as fishing nets and hooks, which have been blamed for the dramatic depletion of Leatherback turtles population in the Pacific Ocean.

After studying the turtles for five years, scientists were able to confirm three main migratory routes female turtles take when swimming from their breeding area in central Africa to Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and down the coast off southern Africa.

“All of the routes we’ve identified take the Leatherbacks through areas of high risk from fisheries,” said Brendan Godley, a professor of conservation at the Exeter University, who also participated in the study.

Dr. Matthew Witt, who published the findings in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B said that the study helped identify 11 nations in the South Atlantic whose territorial waters the turtles pass through, and that those countries could take the lead on marine conservation efforts.

Three-Month-Old Abandoned Bush Baby (Galagos) Adopted By Yellow Baboon At The Kenya Wildlife Service Headquarters (Photos)

A 3-month-old bush baby (other known as Galagos) named Gakii at the Kenya Wildlife Service headquarters was adopted by a 6-month-old female yellow baboon, according to international reports on June 10, 2011.
Both animals were abandoned and are being housed in the animal orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya. The 6-month-old female baboon who plays as a surrogate mother to the bush baby was rescued in Maralal in northern Kenya while the 3-month-old bush baby was rescued in Karatina in central Kenya, reports said.
It was believed that the unusual relationship of the two animals was formed because they need each other to survive in the absence of their parents and their groupings. They drink milk together out of the same bowl, play around and would held each others arms.
“This is not normal. It has not happened here and I guess it has not happened anywhere else,” according to Edward Kariuki, a warden at the animal home in the Kenyan capital as quoted saying in a report.
Reports also said that when the two animals become older, they need to be separated.
Meanwhile, here are some photos of the bush baby and the yellow baboon hugging and cuddling each other.
